The sublime dance between the
electronic and the organic has rarely been executed with
such perfection as San Antonio Texas quartet Blowing Trees has achieved on
their self titled release. Exceptionally reminiscent of The
Bends and Ok Computer era Radiohead at times, the songs on
this disc certainly demonstrate a that these guys have
obviously spent a lot of effort towards honing the time
honored art of songwriting. The melodic, textured guitar
work of Edwin Jared Stephens meshes brilliantly with Chris
Maddin’s soaring emotion filled vocals and poetic lyrics,
while bassist Roy Scavone and drummer Drew Pierce prove to
be more than just your average rhythm section. The above
mentioned Radiohead influence aside, you really get the
feeling after listening to this album that these young
musicians have not openly embraced and soaked up everything
from pop rock, progressive and alternative rock to
electronica, but they’ve successfully turned those
influences into their own unique sound. This album is
downright infectious from beginning to end and you’ll get
absolutely lost in the vast atmospheric layers of the music.
Blowing Trees are like a breath of fresh air, offering a
collection of some of the freshest sounding new music I’ve
heard in a long time.
