Whitesnake – Slip of the Tongue

To
celebrate the 20th anniversary of this classic
Whitesnake album, Universal Music has, in collaboration with
David Coverdale, himself, put together a deluxe edition,
complete with an impressive booklet written by Coverdale and
featuring lyrics to the songs and photographs of the era.
The album,
itself, was a bit of disappointment coming on the heels of
Slide It In and Whitesnake. It featured Coverdale
collaborating with guitar god Steve Vai, perhaps expectations
were too high, as looking back at the music, it holds up better
than expected. “Slip of the Tongue” and “Judgment Day” are pure
Coverdale, while Vai’s reworking of “Fool For Your Loving” was a
hit (although the original is still the preferred version of the
two). Songs like “Kitten’s Got Claws” and “Cheap & Nasty” both
show a band trying hard to make an album based on rock clichés
and thus the reason this one did not succeed as well as the
previous two.
The bonus track, “Sweet Lady Luck,” is a rocker that helps make
up for the albums shortcomings. The DVD bonus videos are cool
as hell. They feature a couple of promo videos from MTV days in
“Fool For Your Loving ‘89” and “Now That You’re Gone” as well as
five tunes from various concerts around the world.
While this
is not a necessary addition to your Whitesnake collection, the
videos and “Sweet Lady Luck” make this one worthy, if you want
it.
