Go West – Kings Of Wishful Thinking - Live

Rating: C
Go West is an English pop duo consisting of vocalist
Peter Cox and guitarist Richard Drummie that was formed
in 1982. While their blue eyed soul / dance sound was
popular across the U.K. throughout most of the 80’s, it
wasn’t until 1990 that the duo would finally crack the
American charts by recording “Kings Of Wishful Thinking”
for The Pretty Woman soundtrack. Rumor has it Sylvester
Stallone was also fond of their sound, so much so that
he asked them to write and record a song for Rocky IV in
1985, which resulted in the track “One Way Street”.
Kings Of Wishful Thinking is a nice trip down memory
lane as the two dust off all their hits over the course
of this seventeen song concert which was recorded in the
U.K. back in 2003. While some of the material does sound
a bit dated, this show finds Cox and Drummie benefitting
from the obvious 80’s revival that began to take shape
in the late 90’s.
To be honest Go West’s music isn’t something I’d
naturally be inclined to seek out and 80’s synth-pop has
always been sort of hit or miss for this reviewer, so
there wasn’t a whole lot that really grabbed me about
this disc. However, that being said Peter Cox does
possess an extremely soulful set of pipes, and as of
this writing he managed to snag the vacant vocal slot in
Manfred Mann’s Earth Band. That is something I’m a
little bit more enthusiastic about; this disc…not so
much.
