Doyle Bramhall the II, Charlie Sexton and Double Trouble’s Chris
Layton and Tommy Shannon are the Arc Angels. While the band
became official after the death of Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Arc
Angels were in formative stages even before the tragic event
took place. The ‘Arc’ is the Austin Rehearsal Complex where
much of Austin’s great musical scene is born. Doyle even took
lessons from SRV. It seems only natural that he play with
Layton and Shannon.
The band didn’t make it as big as Vaughan but a cult following
has kept them on the minds and in the hearts of blues lovers
since they first took the stage. The four musicians eventually
wanted to document their live sound and in 2005 they recorded a
set at the infamous club Stubb’s. Thus came this live album and
DVD. The real treat here is the addition of three new songs
plus a new remake of a Paul McCartney tune. The blues scene’s
future may just include the Arc Angels once again. If you’re a
fan of smooth grooves and smoky blues then this one is for you.
