Autograph – That’s The Stuff

Rating: C –
The debut
release by Autograph contained the classic “Turn Up The Radio”
and stationed the band to forever be remembered as a hair band
one hit wonder. Unfortunately, That’s The Stuff
is the second release by the band and contains no such song.
One wonders if a one hit wonder really deserves this much
attention. From the first album to this one the band went from
being on tour with Van Halen to contemplating getting day jobs
again. It happened that fast. One day they were on top and the
next they were hard rock history.
This album
contains a few songs worthy of mention. “That’s the Stuff” is a
grinding rocker and “Take No Prisoners” seems to represent a
band still trying to make it. The re-release also has the bonus
track “American Band,” the Grand Funk classic. Autograph does
the song justice but it was simply not enough.
This one is
for serious Autograph fans and serious collectors. The band
simply didn’t have the legs to take the next step needed for
fortune and fame and Rock Candy has done a great job reminding
us all just how talent and luck are both needed in this
industry.
