Fandango – Cadillac

Rating: B-
Fandango is best remembered as the training ground band
for future Rainbow, Deep Purple and Yngwie Malmsteen
vocalist Joe Lynn Turner. The seven-piece band mixed
rock grooves, funk and pop into FM radio oriented
songs. Unfortunately, the band never got the push
needed to hit the big time. Cadillac, while
their best overall album, also was the beginning of the
end for the group. Ritchie Blackmore came calling and
Turner ran as fast as he could as he recognized that the
band was imploding by that point.
The album has some good tunes. “Blame It On The Night”
is a straight-ahead rocker that was covered by Ted
Nugent on his Penetrator album in the 1980’s.
“Rock n’ Roll You” and “Fortune Teller” are both strong
tracks but it is the albums finale “Headliner” that is
the shudda, wudda, cudda song here.
Former members of Fandango are probably as surprised as
Fandango fans that this album is once again seeing the
light of day. Without Joe Lynn there is no reason to
look back but JLT has found a comfortable place in the
world of classic rock. As usual, Rock Candy did a great
job of remastering the sound. They also included
amazing liner notes with interviews from Turner and
other band members.
