Black Robot
is the elephant’s graveyard for former Buckcherry members as
three of them ended up here (Jonathan “JB” Brightman, Yogi and
Devon Glenn). Brightman, the group mastermind, is the last
Cherry standing as the others have already left the group.
Undaunted, he will take his singer and band out on the road and
try to make Black Robot a household name – He may want to
consider another name. Sure, Chickenfoot worked out but that
had Hall of Famers in the band. The worst part about this CD is
the bands’ name.
The good
news is that, while the name may be lackluster, the music is
not. “Badass” is a great slab of sleaze rock while “Cocaine” is
AC/DC meets Clapton. The remake is a good one and the song will
go down well in front of a crowd. While many use these two
songs to call Black Robot an AC/DC clone, one only needs to
explore the album deeper to see that this is simply not the
truth. The songwriting is all over the place as “I’m In Love”
is soft and syrupy while “Nervous Breakdown” is funky.
Black Robot
is interesting. While this is not a big hit it does shed some
hope for hard rock. This is a band not afraid to try new things
and, at the same time, still rock their balls off. If they have
any success, and can keep somewhat sober, then I look forward to
the follow up.
