Giant
released their first album in the late 1980’s and found Top 20
success. The future looked bright for the band but, like so
many other melodic rockers from that time period, they had to
fight hair bands for radio and MTV play. Then, in the early
90’s Grunge hit and bands like Giant were torn down to size.
The band had the look and the talent but not the timing and luck
needed to get to the next level.
Now the
band is back with a new lead vocalist in Terry Brock, who does
such a great job that you forget he was not in the band before.
The band retain their roots and still play great candy coated
Journey-esque music. High points include “Never Surrender” and
“Prisoner of Love” while low points point to “Double Trouble”
and “Complicated Man.” At times Giant sounds fresh while other
times they seem to be rehashing the past. It is a fine line
that many melodic bands have a difficult time straddling.
At the end of the day, if you are a fan of pop rock with great
guitars and vocals then this band will have you raising your
lighter – err – cell phone high in the air.
