Steve Morse Band – Out Standing in
Their Field
Eagle Records
www.stevemorese.com
Rating: B
Steve Morse took some time outside of his day job as the
guitarist of Deep Purple to make some music with some
old friends. On the tounge-in-cheek titled new album,
Morse is joined by virtuoso bassist Dave LaRue and
drummer Van Romaine. What follows are ten studio
tracks and a bonus live tune of instrumental hard rock,
Dregs like chicken picking and jazz improvisation.
Morse kicks out the jams on the opening track “Name
Dropping.” His instantly recognizable style comes
through loud and clear. The rhythm borders on heavy
metal while his lead playing is melodic, powerful and
precise.
The
music is top notch from beginning to end, to the point
that one’s head shakes in awe of the inspirational
musicianship these artists bring to the table. The only
puzzling question is why Morse doesn’t write music this
good with Deep Purple. Note to Ian Gillan: Let this boy
write the next album. Me thinks it just may be
amazing. Until that happens, though, check out The
Steve Morse Band to see real music made by real
musicians.
