Monster Magnet – Mindfucker
Napalm Records

Rating: B

Monster Magnet  front man Dave Wyndorf has made a career out of pumping out music that he loves…on his own terms…in his own way. What a lucky bastard…and now…he has done it again!

The band is back with a new album of stoner rock that kinda reminds one of early Blue Oyster Cult…you know before they feared the reaper and hung out with seven screaming disbusters.

The retro punk/rock/stoner sound is not an accident. The New Jersey native has zero interest in keeping up with the times. This album is true to form and will be loved by the hardcore fan base.

The album, titled Mindfucker, is power driven, balls to the wall and loud. In other words, just what one would expect….with maybe more of a nod to the roots than on previous records.

“Rocket Freak” starts this one off and sets the tone for the rest of the album. The tunes are aggressive and up-tempo, but not too in-yer-face or overbearing. They rock…just enough to stay cool.

“I’m God” has that snarly attitude that gave this band a following while “Soul” sounds best cranked up as loud as you can handle it. The title track may be the best of the bunch (check it out below).

Look…the band is not re-inventing the wheel. They are, however, not simply repeating what they have done before. Monster Magnet has, once again, taken what they do…done it exactly how they wanted to do it…and done it well.

How does one not respect that?

This band will never be huge…but if you ‘get it’ then you’re a huge fan of them. If you ‘ve missed out on them so far…this is as good a place as any to see what you’ve been missing. If you’ve been with them for the ride…then this is one more cool place to check out on the trip.

This album is meant to be played loud and often.

Mindfucker is a solid effort.
