Scott B. Bomar – Southbound: An Illustrated History of Southern Rock

Rating: A+

The only thing unfair about this book is the title.  While the book really is the illustrated history of Southern Rock, it is also the oral history told by the stars themselves.

Author Scott B. Bomar did an amazing job on this labor of love.  Not only are there amazing photographs throughout, each chapter is a history lesson on every band that ever flew the rebel flag in the name of Southern Rock.

The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot, Charlie Daniels, .38 Special, ZZ Top, Elvin Bishop, the Atlanta Rhythm Section, Wet Willie, Grinderswitch...they are all here, in brilliant color and their stories are told in brilliant detail.

This review can be kept short because all there is to say is that Scott B. Bomar is truly the Expert in the Field of this often overlooked, yet musically-rich genre.  He even delves into how Southern Rock is still alive and well but hidden in today's country music.

Bottom Line:  This guy knows his stuff and he's shared it in a one-of-a-kind and amazing book.

Buy this one, load up the iPod with your favorite Southern Rock artists, and prepare to be amazed.
