American Dog – Poison Smile

Rating: B

American Dog, featuring former Salty Dog bass player, Michael Hannon, have made quite a name for themselves in the underground world of bands that STILL play kick ass hard rock. You know the kind, dirty, greasy, full of chicks waiting to flash their boobies and bars full of bathrooms that stink like piss and pool tables with as many blood stains as beer stains. We are talking REAL rock and roll. American Dog is best described as three great guys playing three great chords and having an f-ing great time doing it.

Now back with what feels like their 50th album, the band has once again reverted back to acting like horny fifteen year olds and put out 11 songs of grimy hard rock heaven. The album kicks off with “Devil Dog” and that gets the party started. Next up is “Just Like Charlie Sheen” which is pretty much a perfect autobiographical song. On “The Real Nitty Gritty” the band takes a break from sleaze and puts together a bunch of tasty guitar oriented music that will impress those that think The Dog are nothing more than three pretty faces – well, we doubt ANYONE actually thinks that but you get my drift.

They scrape the bottom of the juvenile barrel with “Can Your Pussy Do the Dog” and it is just as AWESOMELY funny as one imagines it to be. “Bathroom Romance” will appeal to anyone who has met that special someone halfway through a Molly Hatchet concert and needed some privacy. At the end of the day, this is exactly what you would expect it to be. The Dog is still growling, howling and willing to hump your leg in appreciation.

Pick this one up at the web link above. You can get the album alone or, for a few bucks more, you can get the CD and a bunch of goodies including an autographed poster by the band. Support the Dog as they are, after all, man’s best friend.
