Heart – Fanatic
Legacy

Rating: B

On October 2nd, Heart will release a new cd titled Fanatic that is a collection of songs that harkens back to the band’s 1970’s beginnings.

The opening title track sounds like old school Heart complete with that cool ass sounding guitar and Ann Wilson’s amazing vocals. The entire disc has a retro feel to it but not at the expense of the songwriting and creativity. It is not like Heart set out to recreate the past, yet they seem to be comfortable enough to write what they want to, no matter what era it is.

The band will not likely suffer from the unspoken ban for new music from classic rock artists on radio but that is not say that there should not be some hits here. “Marshallah” is the best damn song this band has written in years and any rock fan will dig this trippy tune.

At the end of the day, this is a great moment for the band in many ways, as they seem to be embracing who they are without fearing repeating themselves.

They seem very comfortable in their own skin and when they play these new songs live my bet is that the fans will stand up and listen instead of heading to the beer stand and the bathroom.

Overall Heart has created a very fine collection of music this time out.
